Personally, I totally get why in a lot of places you have to be 18 to vote. People my age can barely decide on what fillings they want in subway. But I think another way to see it is that we are the ones that are going to have to live through the consequences of your actions. Older generations constantly remind us that “our children are our future” but then ignore us when we want change. So I’m going to list out a few pro’s and con’s for giving younger generations more of an influence than older generations.

We know our sh!t. I think we all forget that we are the generation who basically grew up having all the information we could ever need in our pockets. Ever since we have learned to read we have heard about most massive NEWS stories. While we may not all understand it, we can tell that a lot of shit is going down. And honestly, it doesn’t take a genious to recognise a few problems with the world even after reading just one article. Let me list a few for you now. Guns, discrimination, global warming… I mean it’s really the same thing over and over again.
So with that being said, I think we aren’t as oblivious as you think we are and we can actually make well informed decisions… Or at least a lot of us can. Some people can’t even tell the difference between a joke and being a dick.
We are going to be the ones facing the consequences. I’m not going to lie, I don’t fully trust my generation would make the right decisions all the time, but I know that when it comes to making the decision we will genuinely make an effort because at the end of the day we are the ones that will have to clean up the mess. Adults could literally cause an apocolypse and be like “right, Imma bounce” and then just not face the impact of their decision. So honestly, if we make a mistake, the joke is quite literally on us.
We don’t have the “old way” of thinking. Have you noticed how the past few presidents and people in power could literally be our grannies and grandas? Because I have. And obviously not all old people think the same way, but for the select few with political power seem to be a little, what’s the word? Racist. Sexist. Close minded.
It does largely depend on what party they are in though. Let’s take the example of Liz Truss, the new British PM. No matter who won the votes, it would have been a Tori so it was always a loose loose situation. In that case we can’t really blame it on the age because there are younger politicians in the party with the same ideologies.
What I’m basically trying to say is that we young people have new, more inclusive, and just overall better ways of thinking. We want equality, we want to save the environment, we want a more equal distribution of wealth. And that’s only a select few things.
So therefore, if we were given more of an influence on votes and elections, we could potentially vote for the more inclusive option instead of the option which gives tax cuts to the wealthy or can’t understand why selling guns in every corner-store is a problem.
Immaturity. If you heard what some of the people in my school have said, you would probably make the legal voting age 30. Of course it is only a select few, but oh my days it literally kills my brain cells to hear them talk. First example, they do literal food fights. I know you just rolled your eyes because that is exactly what I do when I see the first slice of hovis bread fly across the room. This literally isn’t highschool musical! How can anyone think that is remotely amusing? Second example, they joke about girls and crushes. Need I say more? These people haven’t developed since COVID started and it honestly worries me.
We don’t all have perfect views. While I did say that our generation had a new way of thinking, adults have definitely rubbed off on a few of us. First example, they don’t think Andrew Tate is “that bad”. They saying he is misunderstood as though he is the emo kid in the corner of the classroom. A lot of people are still sexist and honestly it’s gonna be a while ’til that sorts itself out. We have kind of also gotten ourselves trapped in a vicious cycle of things that are and aren’t ok to say. We gotta rhyme off a whole list of things before what we said is considered “acceptable”. I mean I’m not gonna lie, I understand some of it, but at some point it’s like people are looking for a problem.
Areas of weakness. In my opinion, our strength is in social problems and not so much in the economy and that stuff. It could just be me because I’m sick of hearing them talk about the price of a Fredo now compared to 20 years ago. I can understand the general idea about inflation and stuff to do with the rising cost of living, but once they use more technical terminology I switch off. I suppose that comes with time, but if we are talking about right now, I think we’ll keep that power with you. Although, saying that, our economy hasn’t been thriving lately and it doesn’t take an expert to see that.
So yeah, what do you think? Should the younger generation be given more power on decisions because it is our future and we have to put up the consequences, or should we leave it to the ones with experience? Tell me what you think in the comments. For me, It’s not simple to answer because I want to say yes but I don’t think we should be given too much power because some people have a little more developing to do. Honestly, we can’t even take care of ourselves, so how can we take care of an entire planet? That’s a whole other topic though, for real. I hope you have a great day, stay safe and stay yourself PERIODT.

So it’s the middle of the 2nd day of the year and I’d say it’s been interesting, to say the least. I mean, not 2 hours ago I quite literally melted my glasses. Call me blonde, but I wore them into a sauna. In my defense, I have done that before when I had a…
