Time To Understand What This Phrase Really Means

If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else

You know, I am not gonna lie to you. I never full understood what this meant. I mean I got the gist but it wasn’t until last night, when I have my daily random thoughts while trying to sleep, that I actually figured it out.

Of course, it means that you need to love yourself before anyone else because you should be the most important thing in your life, but I was always like, how does that stop you from loving someone else. I mean surely people can not like themselves but love somebody else. Then I realised that it is much more complicated than that, well, from how I perceive it. Damn, I am not sure if English class is rubbing off on me or what but we gonna get real deep into this text.

First of all, what is love, baby don’t hurt don’t hurt me, no more. Sorry I had to do that. But seriously. To love somebody means that you adore everything about them. You want to be around them all the time. You can talk about things so easily. You may not have the exact same likes and dislikes but those differences don’t get between you. This is all that I can tell from movies anyways. I have never loved someone truly before. But my point is, how can you do all that, if you don’t even know what you like. What you want to do. What you expect others to respect about you. How you want to be treated. Who you really are. True love isn’t changing yourself to fit the person they want you to be. And it isn’t until you find out who you are and you realise your worth, that you can find that special someone.

Loving yourself means that you learn to know your worth and you don’t want to change anything for anyone else. Loving yourself means that you don’t need anyone to ‘complete you’. Loving yourself means that you wont take shit from nobody if they are disrespecting you. When you love yourself, you accept yourself. When you love yourself, you know what you are looking for in a relationship. When you love yourself, relationships will be easier because they will know the true you and love you for that. You wont have to change nothing for no one.

Lets say you don’t love yourself and you get into a relationship. They could treat you like crap and you are gonna think you deserve it. You wont see that they can’t treat you like that because you don’t know your worth. Even if they don’t take advantage of you, you might have to be someone else so that you can connect with them and even if you do love them in that situation, that isn’t you. The person you are trying to be love them, but you don’t because that isn’t who you are. I think that the best time to have a relationship is when you don’t need one because it is at that point you area happy with yourself and a relationship is just a bonus. And at that point you will be in a relationship with a person who knows the real you. You wont have to work to keep the relationship going. It just happens. And I am sure that is a beautiful thing.

The key word in this phrase is YOU. And if you don’t know who you are yet, then how the hell you gonna love somebody else. Be you. Love YOU. Not the person you think you are meant to be, but you. It may take a long time, trust me I know, and I am still not at the point of being able to love somebody else. But what I also know is that I will get their eventually. My prize wont be the relationship on other side. My prize will be me, and I can’t wait.
